Led By Spirit
Healing Spirit Ministries really came out of an association I had with a very eclectic group of people who gathered at a neighbor's home roughly twice a month to hold "healing meditations." We represented several different religious, ethnic and social backgrounds and although we were a diverse group, we all shared one thing in common: we were all healers of some sort - reiki masters, energy healers, shamans, etc. Later, as our lives became more and more complicated, we met more infrequently but still gathered in spirit and still sent our Healing/Love energy to each other and to the world - meaning the Earth, itself, and all its inhabitants.
I guess I was inspired to create the Ministry because of that experience. I have always been (since my childhood) a healer and the name just seemed appropriate so early in 2004 the Healing Spirit Ministries was born. Later that year, I received an invitation to attend a seminary program, which was strange in itself because I never considered myself to be the minister type - just a healing spirit like any other. At any rate, I checked into the program offered by the Beloved Community and found that it resonated with me in a big way! I felt so drawn to it that I even told Spirit, "If you want me to go, you'll have to provide the funds because I can't afford it." Well, wouldn't you know it - the day before I had to make the first payment in order to attend the program that was just about to start, Spirit provided the exact dollar amount I had requested!! What could I say but, "Ok, I'll go." I went and it literally changed my life! For starters, I'm now a Minister of Spiritual Peacemaking!
Faith Over Religion
I met such wonderful people with whom I am still in contact to this day. I learned a lot and shared a lot but most importantly I realized that my thoughts and beliefs all my life were not so "out there" as others would have me believe. I felt so connected to these beautiful souls despite our differences that the most powerful realization of all settled on my brain: we are all one! I was raised Catholic and I'll never forget the response I got from a "Christian" friend when I suggested that since God had created man in His own image, and since there are so many different kinds of man in the world - how do we know that we're not all seeing the same God but through different filters/eyes? Well, she was just flabbergasted that I would even entertain such a thought and told me, "That's what Satan wants you to believe!" Huh? That made no sense to me whatsoever, and slowly I started looking for the answer to my question. Well, as far as I am concerned the answer is "We are all one body - humankind - and we all share that one spark of Divinity given to us by Spirit." What we have done with that spark has led us to where we are today. Frankly, I think there's room for improvement!
As a society, we took that spark of Divinity and used it to create "religion." Religion was (and still is) a tool for controlling the masses - the original form of government, if you will. However, over the centuries, the Guiding Light behind that governing has faded more and more to where it's hardly recognizable anymore. It's still there; make no mistake! It still sits at the core (in the Sacred Heart) of each of the world's religions and it still calls out for a planet filled with Peace, Acceptance, Love & Gratitude. Thus, I have dedicated myself to embrace all Faith - that kernel of Divine Light in each of us - but make no association to any religion. After all, in my view of reality, Spirit gave us the gift of Faith; man created religion. It's about time we went back to basics and put our energies into the Peace and Unity of Faith rather than continue to focus on the division taught by religion.
Well, in a nutshell, it's someone who not only recognizes the importance of reaching beyond boundaries to embrace all one's brothers and sisters regardless of geo-political, religious, ethnic or other perceived differences but also lives each day in a state of Acceptance & Gratitude - essentially creating an aura of Peace around him/herself and maintaining that aura wherever he/she goes. As that most prolific of writers, Anonymous, has said, "Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard word. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart."
As a Spiritual Peacemaker, I claim as my sacred duty the task of not only being Peace but of showing all who wish to know how to be Peace as well. Please note, I said BEING Peace, not being AT Peace. There is a difference. My hope is that I will be able to teach others and show by example what that difference is. How will I do that? Well, for starters, I will be posting in my blog page, Musings from the Minister, to help achieve this goal. My posts will be combinations of my own personal insights and thoughts; occasional meditations and inspirations; as well as musings inspired by passages taken from James Twyman's "The Art of Spiritual Peacemaking;" books by other Peace Authors; and other sources as the inspiration hits. Please check back periodically or feel free to subscribe to the blog.
Also, I use the Sacred Office of Peace as a daily meditation. The Sacred Office of Peace is the act of reciting and meditating on the Peace Prayers that we learned in the Beloved Community's Seminary program. (We call this act "Praying Peace.") These prayers were offered at a World Peace event that took place in Assisi, Italy in 1986 and later put to music by James Twyman, the Peace Troubadour and founder of the Beloved Community. They became one of the foundations for his Seminary program.
